As the year winds down, our building is entering winter hibernation. To save energy, heat is shut off and all non-vital functions (everything but electricity) is cut. So, between work and building indoor fires, my goal is to do a lot of reading. First up: Mindless Eating, by Brian Wansink. Maybe I will gain some insight into the 3 slices of pizza, 2 breadsticks, 3 peppermint taffies, and bottle of Blue Moon Winter Abbey Ale I consumed while watching Claymore tonight.

The Answer Was Five Guys

Congress is about to pass a law that stipulates minimum decibel levels for hybrid and electric cars travelling below a certain speed. While this is to protect blind pedestrians specifically, I can see how it protects all pedestrians and, to a similar extent, bicyclists. I have a rear-view mirror mounted to safety glasses or sunglasses that allows me to see the always-speeding cars trying to pass on my left. But in tight, congested streets, like downtown Menlo Park, a Prius making a blind turn is extremely dangerous.

One day, a long time from now, someone’s going to wonder what noise our electric cars are producing, and why, and we’re going to have to explain that all our cars used to sound like that. And that someone is probably going to roll their eyes at us.
